For the past year, I anxiously awaited the wedding of my good friend who goes by “La Historiadora de Moda” on her fun blog titled Fashionable Academics.
I was so excited when I first got wind of her engagement, to her long time love, via facebook. During the months that followed, she found a beautiful gown, and set a date for the spring of this year.
Like most couples, La Historiadora and her fiancé initially dealt with figuring out their wedding budget. Even when you try to keep it to the very basic wedding necessities, those costs can add up. The original plan was to have a simply elegant outdoor ceremony, with a fun reception afterwards. However the reality of current economic conditions came to play a few months later.
“My now husband and I are both finishing our PhDs and looking for jobs in our fields, and in this economy the market is very tight. I also felt overwhelmed with the planning. I’m a busy woman. I teach at two universities, I’m finishing a dissertation, I run a blog, and I’m training for another half-marathon.”
Talk about a full plate! Fast forward to December of ’09…. La Historiadora de Moda sent me an email stating that she and her fiancée had just decided to scratch the wedding plans, and head to the courthouse in a few weeks. I cannot tell you the relief that I could already sense from her. Besides, I was so excited for them! It was so Carrie and Big! Hey, the big elaborate weddings are nice, but let’s get real. If it’s not in the budget, it’s not in the budget. Although I am in the business of weddings, I never advocate for couples to go broke over their special day. It is about the commitment, period.
The wedding date was January 22, 2010. Here is what La Historiadora de Moda thought about her big day.
“I would really recommend this to others. We spent about $5,000 including the booking of the professional photographer, wedding cake, and catered food. It was nice to actually be able to hang out with the 30 people we had at our home reception that night and get to eat plenty of delicious Lebanese food.”
When I really think back, this wedding was more fitting than the other one that La Historiadora had planned. After knowing someone for about 10 years, it is easy for me to tell when a certain situation may not be the right fit.
So..from a Wedding Planner’s standpoint, they did exactly what I always stress to my clients. Make the day about you. I know that there can be many opinions flying around, but at the end of the day, it is about the couple who is making the commitment.
